Join us to honor one of the largest native forests in Pinehurst, which will be razed on July 23rd.
The Pinehurst Big Fir forest is a true PNW native forest, cherished by the community and home to iconic wildlife like merlins and Cooper's hawks. The generous 7500 square foot corner lot is almost big enough to split, and could easily have incorporated all the trees and the same number and size of homes. But Seattle’s tree policies are designed to maximize quick profits for private developers over long-term community health, so every tree on the property will be removed, including four Doug firs with average 3-foot diameter trunks which are likely over 100 years old.
While neighbors were carefully monitoring the SDCI website for updates about the trees, SDCI quietly approved a second address—on another street—where the "real" tree removal notices were filed, while two tree notices for the original address languished unapproved. And because SDCI also created a special category of small, unremarkable tree sizes on their forms just for developers, the removal of these giant trees will not even be reflected in the City data.
Razing Pinehurst’s cooling, carbon-sequestering climate protection for private profit is business as usual for Seattle, but we won’t let this happen quietly.
Join us Monday to learn more about the corruption that has brought us Seattle’s failed tree policies, and actions we can take to stand up for climate justice in an era of heatwaves, wildfires and climate change impacts.
